Spatial analysis

This is a property where an old watermill was stationed. Currently, it is a brewery, restaurant and party venue. it is located on the outside of a small village and is near the vicinity of an old castle and a national reserve. Several long-distance trails run alongside the property. For this project, the assignment was to create a new plan for the entirety of the property with the different demands of the owner.

Built up of design

The design of this property is made up of different interventions that can be implemented over a long period, this was one of the demands of the client. Each of these interventions can be made separate from another but work towards an integral design.

1 Determine entrance

2 Accessibility guidance

3 New layout of paths

4 Push back kitchen garden

5 Restructure kitchen garden

6 Layout for new orchard

7 Layout for brewery garden

8 Allocation of parking area

9 Hedges to minimize visibility on cars

10 Redefine edges to road side

11 Replenish old orchard

12 Reconstruct historic water mill pond

The former watermill pond and the features of the historic watermill had been lost. In the renovation plans for the buildings, new construction for the watermill had been created. On elevation maps, it is still visible where the old pond had been situated. Within this plan, the aim is to reinstate the old water pond and create an experience for visitors of the watermill. The original elevation of the pond makes it possible for visitors to get a glance at eye-level over the water. A hard edge towards the roadside that is visible can be used to inform people about the history of this location and can accentuate the lines of the old watermill from the courtyard.

Reconstructed historic watermill pond

The final design focuses on the experience of visitors through the brewery without compromising on historic elements. A brewery garden is created to give visitors a tour pass by all the plants that are used during the brewing process. The kitchen garden provides the restaurant with fresh fruit and vegetables for dishes. In the orchard, larger party venues along weddings can be held. The parking lot is at the North of the property enclosed by hedges so that visibility on the cars is minimized. One new entrance near the chicken coup allows hikers to enter the property directly from the trail. The positioning of the new entrance along with the new terrace along the orchard provides the hikers with a clear overview of the functions of the property, making it clear to them that they can stroll in and have a drink and something to eat.
