Garden Concept Design

Location: Ooijen Wanssum, The Netherlands

A Garden Concept design was created to be a part of a planning application and concept design for the formation of 3 homes on the inside of the dyke along the river the Meuse.

Date: July 2021

Client: private housing developer

Made for:  MR.STIR Architect + Planner

Project status: terminated due to planning restrictions.

These products are part of a project done by MR.STIR Architect + Planner.  These products are created with supervision by the leading architect (Maarten Huls)  and urban planner (Martijn van Bussel). These products were made during my internship at MR.STIR Architect + Planner.

This is a landscape integrating project. Due to the relocation of the dyke the development area will be positioned within the river dykes. Legislation in the Netherlands prohibits houses to be in danger of flooding and must either be protected by dykes or lay on top of a terp.  In this development, three homes are proposed positioned on terps.

Location

The design for the housing that is proposed within this development plan had already been created by MR.STIR Architect + planner. The challenge was to connect and integrate the properties of these houses within this complex area whilst creating a garden for the families that will be living in these houses. The integration had to balance the history, stakeholders, environment and be later customisable for an exact landscape plan that fits the homeowners.

After an analysis vision points were set up, points such as blending into the natural landscape, preserving the beaver burrow, enhancing lines of sight and accentuating different landscape properties.

Within the concept phase, the focus lies on creating the landscape designs for the individual properties and for the overall site, the three properties are built out of similar building blocks and will look blended from a distance.  The two smaller properties have fewer influences impacting the design. Whereas the larger property also features different landscapes such as brushwood and forest cores.

The view sheds of the new homes will look onto the river, in between property of N° 1 and N° 2 and the river a campsite is located. Two options are proposed to minimize the view of the campsite from the property. The first option allows the campsite to gain an extra row for caravans but does require levelling and subsiding of the current campsite. Option 2 offers the campsite banked clamping spots.
