Private Garden Design

Location: Oosterbeek, The Netherlands

Educational Project for a private client. A design was created by several students, owner used materials as concepts for the development of the garden. One of my first projects done.

Date: December 2017

Client: Private owner

Made for:  Helicon (Educational Institution)

Project status: educational

This is a project for a privately-owned garden, I started this project by drawing rough-styled sketches with different styles. Eventually, choices were made to combine the aspects of several different sketches. This concept evolved into the digitally processed floor plans for the garden. This for the plan was then detailed in AutoCAD.

Two mood-boards were created to show a choice of materials that would fit the style of the garden in the future. One was made for all the vegetation and one was made for the building materials.  Both the mood-boards were based upon the interests of the owner of the home. A shade garden based on a Querco-Fagetum forest was proposed. In this garden, the focus lies on planting with different textures and shades of green and not on a flower ornamental style.

The circular shapes are favoured by the owner over straight lines, the circular path along the central lawn allows people to walk through the garden instead over one path. There are two small seating areas, one that is shaded in the left corner and one that is in full sun on the right. At the front of the house, there is a third seating area that is sheltered from the road so that there is more privacy in the front garden. There is plenty of space for the car and entry to the garage is preserved.  The paths in the backyard are half paved and half set with self-binding gravel that allows better drainage of rainwater. These paths are also set deeper than the paved areas in order to catch rainwater and allow for slow infiltration.

For this garden, good combination of plants is essential as it is not depending on many flowering species. The species within the garden are similar but differ in texture and flowering seasons. A small overview of the different appearances of the plants was created along with a description of each of the plant's characteristics. Within this garden plants are planted in clusters together, the variety of plants is limited to ensure unity in the garden
